The Excitement Builds
There is nothing like the morning after a snowstorm. Everything coated in a fluffy blanket of snow, still white and sparkly and untouched. The air smells cleaner, and the usual hustle and bustle of the morning seems to be hushed for just a while longer. I love driving on mornings like this, feeling awake but enjoying the silence. Then I turn the corner to Gunstock's access road and the vibe changes completely. Seeing the summit shrouded in snowmaking clouds, bathed in the glow of the sunrise with those snowy trails snaking down from the top, my blood starts pumping and I can't wait to get out there.
"Top to Bottom Day" is one of the days I look forward to most each winter. With months full of countless summit laps ahead of me, those first few runs from the top always feel more special, like winter has officially started. Upon receiving word that the summit was set to open today, we were able to head up with ski patrol this morning before they started loading folks on the Panorama lift. A little over seven inches of fresh snow to add to the base our snowmaking crew laid out was just what the doctor ordered to open top to bottom with some great conditions.
Snow guns have been running around the clock, blanketing the mountain in fluffy goodness, and the weather forecast shows things staying chilly and snowy around here. Score! Our snowmaking crew has been paying special attention to Blundersmoke Park, Ramrod Race Trail, and the Tubing Hill as they aim to open more terrain as quickly as possible.
For those nocturnal, night owl types, tomorrow will be the start of Night Sessions! Nights here begin at 3pm to keep the Panorama lift in the mix for the first hour, providing some great summit runs to start the evening off right. And this year, night tickets include rentals, Quick Tip lessons, and 2 runs total on the Tubing Hill and/or Mountain Coaster (Tubing and Mountain Coaster operation/hours). I recommend skiing/riding first, then a snack/beverage break, then Tubing/Coaster, then apres in the Powder Keg.
Something else that happens to me after the first big snowfall is my inner Buddy the Elf comes out, wanting to make all of the cookies, play all the holiday music, and decorate everything in sight. Shopping for loved ones (and possibly myself) is also part of this, so I always start lurking around our on-site ski and board shop trolling for good finds. Mountainside Outfitters has launched their annual 12 Days of Deals sale, with different featured sale items each day thru Christmas Eve. This is a great opportunity to get holiday shopping on lock while saving money on necessary (and awesome) winter gear. Check out the list of deals below:
Enjoy those early season vibes folks, and make sure to appreciate the trails as they open. Each new trail opening is an opportunity to spend quality time taking runs from a different perspective and feel, while having more to look forward to. And this winter, it feels like we have a whole lot to look forward to.
