Would you believe us if we told you that Gunstock is one of the newest sites of a global treasure hunt? While you probably won’t cross paths with the likes of Nicolas Cage, Indiana Jones or Captain Jack Sparrow, folks around the world are on the hunt for this treasure, and rest assured, there’s plenty of adventure to be had along the way!
Geocaching is a global outdoor treasure hunt where players utilize GPS devices or mobile apps to navigate their way to hidden containers called caches. Often discreetly hidden nearby GPS coordinates (or even in plain sight), caches typically contain a logbook to document your visit as well as a variety of treasures left for visitors to enjoy. Thanks to one of Gunstock’s own young shredders, Bodie, there’s now some new treasure to hunt right here at the mountain.

Bodie is an avid Gunstock snowboarder and dedicated geocacher, explaining to us that he’s found “probably over a hundred” caches since starting the hobby a couple of years ago with his mom, Lauren. “Whether ripping down the trails in winter or zipping for the views in summer, Gunstock is one of our favorite places to be,” she explains in the cache’s description. After writing a compelling letter on the subject, Bodie and Lauren made a special visit to Gunstock President and General Manager, Robert Drake’s, office to get the mountain on geocachers’ maps across the globe.

With a little guidance from Robert, Bodie found a perfect hiding place for his cache. “We want to take a few things into consideration before we pick a spot,” Robert shared. He and Bodie talked about factors like snowfall, accessibility, snow sport and vehicle traffic and safety, which Bodie thoughtfully assessed at each potential hiding place. No stone was left unturned and no hollow unexplored. Our search took us up ski trails and through the Adventure Park. Not a bad side quest during your treasure hunt if you ask us!
Finally, Bodie zeroed in on a location that checked all the boxes including “being cool” – another priority for our young geocaching savant.
Now that the treasure is stashed, it’s yours to find!

How it works:
-
- Getting started: First download the Geocaching app or make a profile on their website. Open the map to find hidden caches in your area. Here you can check out each cache’s description, difficulty rating, and target coordinates.
- Searching: Pick a cache nearby and use your phone’s GPS in the app to navigate to it! Look around carefully when you get close to the coordinates. You may find clues in the cache’s description or other user logs.
- Finding: Once you find the hidden treasure, take out the paper logbook inside and sign your name. Caches may contain small trinkets which you can trade if you’ve brought a small item of equal or greater value.
- Wrapping up: Make sure to put the container back exactly where you found it so it can be found by the next person.
A Few Tips:
-
- Bring a pen to sign the log and some small trinkets to trade or place in the container.
- Try to think like the hider – containers can be cleverly disguised as everyday items and can take a sharp eye to find!
- Try to be stealthy in your search! You don’t want to draw unwanted attention to a hiding spot just in case there are others around you also searching for it.
- Have fun, duh!
Thanks to Bodie's initiative to get Gunstock on the geocaching map, we’re reminded to get curious, reconnect with nature, and that sometimes the best adventures can be found hidden in plain sight.

Bodie did the work, now get out there!
